A Modern Approach
Changes occur to the body with pregnancy and breastfeeding that many women would rather reverse. Dr. Chang and Dr. Wang use their skills and experience to evaluate your unique needs and cosmetic goals before creating a specific surgical plan. For most women, a mommy makeover includes:
- Tummy tuck: Exercising and eating a healthy diet are excellent lifelong habits to develop. Unfortunately, as many mothers know, they can’t reverse all of the changes to your body that happen during pregnancy. Stretched skin, especially after multiple pregnancies, often loses its ability to “bounce back” and hangs loosely over the waist. The abdominal muscles become separated and bulge outward. During a tummy tuck, your surgeon repairs those muscles and removes excess skin, giving you a flatter abdominal contour. In some cases, the surgeon can also remove stretch marks or a C-section scar during a tummy tuck.
- Liposuction: Liposuction can remove pockets of fat that persist after pregnancy. It can help contour the hips, abdominal area, legs, under the chin, or practically any other area of stubborn fat. The results look smooth and natural.
- Breast enhancement: Breastfeeding often takes a toll on the breasts’ shape and volume. If you are happy with the size of your breasts but notice sagging, a breast lift can restore their perkiness. Combining a lift with breast implants enhances both the size and shape of your breasts. On the other hand, breast reduction surgery is an option if pregnancy left behind overly large breasts that limit your physical activity and cause neck and back pain. No matter which option you choose, we aim for a beautiful result that helps you feel more feminine.
Although those are the most common choices, a mommy makeover is truly a customizable operation, and you can add or forego many different procedures. For instance, some patients add anti-aging facial treatments to their mommy makeovers for a comprehensive rejuvenation.
Combining procedures is common and safe, but it is important to choose a plastic surgeon with extensive experience. Our doctors are meticulous about planning each surgery to ensure your safety and to get the best possible results.

Advanced Techniques
Our surgeons use a range of specialized techniques for each mommy makeover depending on the surgical options you choose. In some cases, for instance, a full tummy tuck isn’t necessary, and a mini-tummy tuck will be all you need. This is an appropriate approach for patients who don’t need abdominal muscle repair or belly button repositioning.
Additionally, our surgeons are experienced with various types of liposuction, enabling them to choose the best approach for you. The choices include:
- Traditional liposuction, which includes infusing the area with a saline solution that includes medication to helps swell and firm the fatty tissue, which is suctioned out with a thin cannula
- SAFELipo®, a 3-step process that uses a gentle form of power-assisted liposuction, enabling the surgeon to remove fat with little damage to surrounding tissues
Additionally, our doctors use advanced suturing techniques and carefully plans incisions so that they are hidden in the most discreet positions possible.
Our doctors also understand that for many mothers, planning a mommy makeover can be a challenge both logistically and emotionally. Everyone at Columbia Aesthetic Plastic Surgery uses compassion, sensitivity, and precise planning to provide you with a process that is convenient and exciting, helping you restore a sense of femininity and confidence.

What Is Recovery Time After Mommy Makeover?
Each woman has a different recovery experience following a mommy makeover. Factors including the specifics of her procedure, her anatomy and physiology, and her adherence to postoperative instructions can affect her recovery process. The average patient can expect to drive and leave the house after 1 week. During this time, light activity may be resumed, but expect to wait up to 6 weeks to resume strenuous activity, such as working out.
Discomfort is manageable with prescribed medications or long acting local anesthetics. Some medicines may make you lose your appetite or feel drowsy. Rest is important, but it’s also a good idea to walk around the house several times a day to prevent blood clots. During the recovery period, if you have young children you’ll need help with childcare, chores, and other activities. It’s important to have supportive family or friends that are willing to lend a hand.
Even though a mommy makeover combines different procedures, the recovery is generally not much longer than if you had a single procedure performed. We encourage mommy makeover patients to contact our office with any questions or concerns during their recovery.
Mommy Makeover FAQ
What is the cost of a Mommy Makeover?
Because multiple procedures are included in a Mommy Makeover, the cost of the surgery varies from patient to patient. The price of the operation includes the surgeon’s fee, operating room costs, and a fee for the anesthesiologist. The benefit of combining procedures is that those costs only have to be paid a single time. We provide a detailed quote after your consultation.

Who may have a mommy makeover?
Despite the name, mommy makeover surgeries aren’t just for mommies. Women from all walks of life can benefit from the procedure, which typically combines breast enhancement, tummy tuck surgery, and liposuction into one operation. The breasts and abdomen are commonly affected by pregnancy and breastfeeding, so mothers often get this combination surgery. However, it is appropriate for anyone concerned about sagging breasts, loose abdominal skin, and localized fat deposits.
The procedure can include other areas, too, with facial treatments, for example. Because of their potential for customization, mommy makeovers suit a variety of patients. The best candidates are adult women who are nonsmokers and generally healthy. These women should have supportive family and friends and clear, realistic aesthetic goals.

How soon after having children can I have a mommy makeover?
This time varies for different people. The key is that your body has stopped changing due to pregnancy. You should be at a stable weight and be done breastfeeding. It’s also important that you are able to adhere to the activity restrictions after surgery, such as not lifting heavy things — a difficult habit to break for some mothers of young children. The earliest time after childbirth we recommend is 6 months. On the other end of the spectrum, mothers with grown children can also make excellent candidates for surgery.

What are the advantages of combining surgeries?
There are several advantages to combining multiple surgeries into a single procedure such as a mommy makeover. One major consideration is convenience. In general, it’s easier to undergo one larger surgery rather than spacing out several small ones over the course of several months. By combining procedures, a patient’s total downtime is reduced, allowing her to get back to her regular activities sooner.
Reduced expense is another benefit. When several procedures are combined, expenses such as operating room fees and anesthesia costs need to be paid only once.
Finally, another important advantage is the “wow” factor. Lots of women like the idea of a major transformation rather than a gradual adjustment, and a mommy makeover can provide it.

How long does a typical mommy makeover procedure last?
No two mommy makeovers are exactly alike, so there is no hard-and-fast timeline for the surgical process itself. Depending on the procedures performed, most mommy makeovers last between 2 and 6 hours. Mommy makeovers are outpatient procedures, and patients can return home after a brief period of observation.

What will my scars look like?
Scarring is an important consideration before any surgery. Dr. Chang takes care to use techniques that minimize the risk of scarring, although some scars are inevitable. With good postoperative care, most incisions fade to inconspicuous marks.
Your specific scars will depend on the procedures you undergo and the incisions required. Some procedures, such as liposuction, produce very tiny scars, while others, such as tummy tucks, create larger ones, although they are hidden beneath clothing. Whether your procedure involves liposuction, tummy tuck, or another service at our Columbia practice, Dr. Chang will spend plenty of time with you to explain which incisions will be used and the level of scarring you can expect.

How can I maintain the results of my mommy makeover?
Even after cosmetic surgery, our bodies continue to change and age over time. By following your postoperative instructions and maintaining your weight through a healthy diet and exercise regimen, you can enjoy the beautiful results of your mommy makeover for many years.
